Jayden Stockley putting “big pressure” on himself to deliver at Charlton Athletic

Jayden Stockley is going to put “big pressure” on himself in terms of personal targets after completing his permanent move to Charlton Athletic.

The striker, 27, has signed a three-year contract with the Addicks and joins from Preston North End for an undisclosed fee.

Stockley scored eight goals in 22 games on loan in SE7 last season. He is keeping his scoring target private for the 2021-22 campaign, but told Charlton’s official website: “The fact I’m getting a full pre-season in is just so exciting.

“I’ve got my own personal targets and they will be big, because I need to put a lot of pressure on myself now. This needs to be the best years of my career.

“This needs to be a period that when I finish football and look back, all I do is smile and look back at it with satisfaction.

“The next few years are really big for me and the club also. Side by side it should be a formula that works very well.”

Other League One clubs were interested in Stockley – especially Portsmouth. We broke the news that Danny Cowley was chasing the targetman – but also that Stockley’s focus was on landing a full-time switch to Charlton.

“My goal when I came down was to become a Charlton player permanently, so it is mission complete,” said Stockley. “I was desperate to get promotion, but that’s going to have to wait another year.

“Once you’re in, settled and scoring goals it is a case of not taking it for granted. All I can compare it to is my time at Exeter. I went on loan there before I signed. It is just a feel you get off the pitch and at the training ground. You just feel you’re going to score every time you’re on the pitch. That’s the feeling I got at Charlton. I should’ve scored more goals.

“The relationships I built were the biggest reason this could be done. I valued those relationships so highly that I wasn’t prepared to let them go.”
