Lee Carsley: ‘Crystal Palace defender has a lot more to show in an England shirt’

Departing England interim boss Lee Carsley says there is a lot more to come from Marc Guehi in both international and club football.

The 24-year-old started four of the games during Carsley’s stint in charge and picked up an assist in the 5-0 win over Ireland at Wembley on Sunday.

Lewisham-raised Guehi has 22 senior caps to his name and was a key player under Gareth Southgate as England reached the final of Euro 2024.

Thomas Tuchel will become the new Three Lions boss in the New Year.

“I made Marc [England] captain when I was in the U21s,” said Carlsey.

“He’s a player who has shown leadership qualities throughout his career so far.

“I think he’s had a really good camp. He’s playing really well at Palace in the games that I have seen and he’s moving in the right direction in terms of his quality. When he plays for England, he probably goes up another level as well.

“I still think there is a lot more to come from Marc. Physically, he’s fast and he’s aggressive. On the ball, he is excellent as well so he just needs to keep improving.

“There’s good competition for places in that centre-back position, but Marc is definitely worthy of his position.”
