Lee Gregory on Millwall conceding late goals, why the Den is still a stronghold and his goals target

BY RICHARD CAWLEY

Lee Gregory reckons there is not a whole lot wrong with Millwall’s home form – just a need to grind a result out.

The Lions frontman got his eighth goal of the campaign in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Hull City.

The South Londoners have conceded a lot of goals in the final 20 minutes at The Den this season – with Markus Henriksen adding to that total at the weekend. Millwall are winless in six Championship matches but did climb out of the relegation zone.

Gregory, due to be out of contract at the end of this season, said: “It’s frustrating. We were the better team. We came back fighting and threw everything at it in the second half, but conceding goals when we’re on top is silly. We need to cut that out.

“Maybe we sat off a bit too much and it’s another mistake for their second goal.

“In the last 15 minutes of every game we seem a bit nervy.

“We’ve had two draws from our last two games now, so that’s a stepping stone.

“Our home form still is our strength, we just keep switching off. We’ve been the better team, we just need to get over that last hurdle. I’m sure we’ll work on that. We’re more comfortable at home, we need to grind a result out.

“Because we did so well last season, we were expected to do better this term. We’ve been knocked down a peg or two. We need to go back to what we did last year.”Gregory has not revealed his goal target but is only two shy of his total haul for the 2017-18 campaign. He had only netted three times at the same stage of last season.

“I had a target before Christmas and I’m not far off it,” he said. “We’ve got a few more games before Christmas – so hopefully I can nick a couple more and help the team get a win.

“I never score headers so I’m happy with that [scoring one against Hull].”

Glasgow Rangers are being linked with a fresh move for Jake Cooper in the January transfer window – but Millwall’s stance is that their big centre-back is not for sale.

The SPL giants made more than one official bid for the ex-Reading centre-back in the summer but never got remotely near a figure that would have given the Lions a dilemma. The Scottish press also claim former Millwall man Mark Beevers, in his final year at Bolton, is another option.

Millwall are keen to secure Cooper on a new contract.
