Midfielder flying out for Millwall training camp in the middle of this week

George Saville is set to report back for pre-season training later this week – the Millwall midfielder getting dispensation to return after the main squad due to his international commitments.

The 29-year-old ended up playing 49 matches last season as he featured in three fixtures for Northern Ireland in early June.

The Lions’ campaign finished at Bournemouth on May 7. They resumed pre-season training last week and flew out to Ireland for a training camp at Fota Island.

Rowett told the South London Press: “Sav has just got married and went on honeymoon. He is going to join us midway through the Ireland trip. Some of our players have had six weeks rest – not complete rest because they work all through summer, they’ll go on training camps on holiday. There is a level of professionalism – back in my day you used to get back from pre-season and need to lose the stone that you put on in the off season.

“Sav will probably only two or three weeks break and then he’ll be back in. Although it is nice to have everyone back at the same time, you have to accept that some players over the longer term – 46 games – need a mental and physical break.

“He’ll get a couple of days back in with the group in Ireland. It will be good to see him.”
