Millwall keep play-off hopes alive – and boss Gary Rowett felt they could easily have scored more against Posh

Gary Rowett felt his Millwall side should have run out bigger winners against Peterborough United today.

The Lions made it 45 points banked at home – the most in the Championship this season – with a 3-0 victory.

Benik Afobe and George Saville were both on target for the Lions along with Josh Knight scoring an own goal.

The result moved Millwall up to eighth in the table ahead of a final day trip to AFC Bournemouth.

The Lions are three points behind sixth-placed Sheffield United, whose goal difference is five superior.

Rowett said: “The second half performance was really good at times – quite scintillating – with lots of chances. We probably should’ve scored more goals. We had good opportunities and missed some great chances.

“We changed formation at half time and put Lenny a little further forward. It allowed us to press a little bit higher and a little more aggressive and on the front foot in their half.

“It was more or less all of ours [the second half] and more a case of how many we’d get.

“I’m pleased with the performance and I’m pleased with the result. But we’re at a point of the season where a couple of goals might have made it even more interesting. We probably should’ve had that.”

Asked why his team are often improved after the break, Rowett replied: “I’ve got no idea because if I had the solution it wouldn’t keep happening, would it?

“I don’t think we started the game tense, I felt we started it quite relaxed. Peterborough’s results have been really good the last five or six games, it’s just been too late for them this season. You don’t just roll up and score as many goals as you want against teams like that.

“There were opportunities for us early on in the game and if we score one of those then maybe that would’ve settled us down even more. We didn’t and we had about three or four different plans to chase the game today – to try and make as many attacking changes as necessary to see if we can take the game away. At 1-0 we end up changing it again to see if we can get even more attackers on the pitch.

“You run the risk of being a bit open and having that lead pegged back but we knew it was about goals and about trying to chase goals. Second half we did. I’m a little bit disappointed we couldn’t score four or five.”
