QPR boss outlines how Slaven Bilic’s sacking changed plans for Watford clash

QPR boss Gareth Ainsworth admitted he had already done a lot of prep on Slaven Bilic’s Watford side before he was sacked on Tuesday and replaced by Chris Wilder.

The Croatian was relieved of his duties just six months into his stint at Vicarage Road, with the Hornets 10th in the Championship table and four points off the top six.

Wilder, who has been out of work since he left Middlesbrough in October, was announced as their new manager 17 minutes after Bilic’s departure was confirmed.

Watford head to west London with Ainsworth’s side looking for their first win in 2023 and of his tenure.

“If you had seen us on Tuesday afternoon, you would have been laughing,” Ainsworth told QPR’s YouTube channel of Bilic’s sacking.

“We did a lot of prep on Slaven Bilic’s team. At the last moment, it flashed up on SkySports that Watford had sacked Slaven Bilic, and Chris Wilder is in charge for the rest of the season.

“It’s almost a throw the tactics board down moment for me. It’s going to be different – without a doubt.

“I know Chris. We have managed together quite a few times with his Oxford and Northampton teams.

“It’s going to be tough – he’s a very good manager. He’s managed in the Premier League and worked his way right up – like myself – through the lower divisions. 

“I have got a lot of respect for Chris. He knows that this QPR team will be battling.”
