QPR head coach Marti Cifuentes has his say on potential January transfer business at Loftus Road

Marti Cifuentes has revealed that conversations about activity in the January transfer window are ongoing with the hierarchy at QPR.

The west London club are in the Championship relegation zone, two points from safety, and were only able to sign free agents in the summer due to the EFL’s Profit and Sustainability rules (formerly Financial Fair Play).

Cifuentes, who took over as head coach at the end of October, has prioritised working with the players he currently has at his disposal but has not ruled out making signings next month.

“We are in internal conversations with the club about how we need to approach this process,” he said.

“We know about the Financial Fair Play situation… limitations and restrictions. In that sense I think we are quite aligned with how we want to act.

“We have constant communication, as all of the clubs in the world have, regarding how we can improve the team and the squad but right now it is not the main focus when we have such an important period in front of us.

“We have a good plan. We know how difficult it is, not only for QPR but for many clubs in this league.

“We know how the market is, things can change very quickly. We have good players, there might be interest in them but at the same time, the same as all of the clubs in the world, we might have an interest in trying, if possible, to improve our squad but this is nothing new.

“We will continue to work in a calm way to try and get the best from the squad. I knew what the picture was before I arrived at QPR and that is about getting the best of it.”

QPR are the only club in the second tier that has not borrowed any players on loan this season, and Cifuentes suggested that he was not against the idea of temporary arrivals in January.

“If a player can improve the squad it is always welcome on a general basis,” he said.

“Then, of course, you need to understand that loan deals are usually short term. If there is a possibility of a buyout option or the possibility to extend that is always something to consider.

“I can’t say that I do like or don’t like loans, it depends on the club’s situation and many factors.

“If Messi can come on loan to QPR, I would take it tomorrow.”
