QPR target signs new long-term contract at Millwall – Rowett ‘really pleased’ that negotiations completed successfully

Millwall have confirmed that Danny McNamara has signed a new long-term contract.

QPR had seen low bids rejected for the Sidcup-born 23-year-old defender during the current transfer window.

But the Lions made a breakthrough in negotiations over an extension at the back end of last week.

McNamara follows midfielder Billy Mitchell, also a boyhood supporter of the Championship club, in committing his future.

“Some contracts are done very quickly but sometimes they aren’t – it’s what happens,” Rowett told the South London Press. “There was a little bit of outside interest in Danny which probably made it a little tougher to get sorted straight away.

“But to be fair to Danny, all along he said he wants to re-sign if it was the right thing for him to do. We finally got to a scenario where everybody was happy. I’ve said it all along – Danny had a fantastic season and he’s a player that certainly the fans hold in high esteem because of his close links to the club, his commitment, effort and competitiveness.

“It was an easy one, from our perspective, to try and get done. Although it has taken a bit of time we’re absolutely delighted we can concentrate now on trying to improve and adding to those performances.

“We’re really pleased. It’s another big step from the club and great that Danny is committed and sees where we’re going as somewhere that can really help him as well.”
