Welling United see more points slip away at Truro City

BY MARK DOIG
Welling United have not won as many points as their performances deserve – with Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Truro City further evidence of that.
The hosts equalised in the 95th minute after only three additional minutes had been indicated by the fourth official.

Wing manager Steve King switched to a 3-5-2 formation but just four minutes had passed when the injured Jordan Gibbons had to be replaced by Charles Banya, making his Welling league debut.

Following a quiet 15 minutes, Welling went ahead. Jack Jebb delivered a corner that was flicked on to Thierry Audel and he finished clinically at the far post for his third goal of the season.

Billy Palfrey fired over from a tight angle for Truro, while Brendan Kiernan twice had shots deflected wide for Welling as they finished the half strongly.

Truro had the better of the early second half action. Ed Palmer rose to meet a Connor Riley-Lowe free-kick but diverted it beyond the far post. Tyler Harvey got on the end of Palfrey’s cross but Daniel Wilks made an excellent close-range save.

Richard Orlu had two half chances for Welling, first when heading over from Jebb’s free-kick, then firing a shot too high after Anthony Acheampong had knocked a Jebb cross into his path.

Sixteen second-half minutes had passed when Truro equalised. A long hopeful ball was misjudged by Wilks and Niall Thompson lifted home from a tight angle.

Bradley Goldberg was introduced for Welling and he restored the Wings’ lead within minutes. Kiernan crossed and Goldberg diverted it cleverly inside the far post.

Kiernan shot just wide as Welling looked to close the game out but they were undone deep into injury time when Jarod Lewington leaped unchallenged from a deep corner and headed home.

Welling United: Wilks, Gibbons (Banya 4), Braham-Barrett, Audel, Acheampong, Orlu (L’Ghoul 70), Jebb, Ijaha (Goldberg 70), Mills, Kissock, Kiernan. Not used: Mendy, McCallum.
