Welling welcome return to away form with strong win over Oxford

Oxford City 0 (0)

Welling United 1 (1)

An Excellent Welling United performance helped to end their long away match drought at Oxford City.

Bradley Goldberg score the only goal from the penalty spot but with a little more luck they might have won far more convincingly.

Manager Steve King utilised all three of his strikers, Jack Barham, Bradley Goldberg and Danny Mills and they enjoyed pinging the ball around on Oxford’s 3G pitch.

They had to dig in early on, though, and goalkeeper Dan Wilks was called upon to make an excellent diving save from Kabongo Tshimanga and good ones from Brandon Thomas-Asante twice and a further one from Tshimanga.

However, having seen the initial burst out, Welling started to stretch Oxford and went ahead on twenty minutes. Mills tried to force himself ahead of Eddie Jones and the Oxford full back brought him down in the area. Goldberg stepped up and drilled home the spot kick.

Both goalkeepers then made saves, Wilks once again from Tshimanga then Craig King from a good low effort by Montel Agyemang.

King was caught out by a Craig Braham-Barrett near post cross but recovered to tip over before Mills headed over Agyemang’s subsequent corner.

Almost immediately after the interval Anthony Acheampong had a header cleared off the line before Welling hit the post in their next three attacks.

Bradley Goldberg celebrates scoring

First Barham created an opening for himself but his twenty yard effort that had King well beaten flew back off the woodwork. Then an Agyemang free kick was re-directed by Goldberg but it came back off the inside of the post.

Finally, Mills got on the end of a Jordan Gibbons low cross but his flick on clipped the wrong side of the post and went out.

Reece Fleet tried his luck from distance but Wilks got everything behind it before Barham again came close for Welling with a low drive that appeared to have been tipped beyond the far post but the referee deemed otherwise.

As the game came to a close, Thierry Audel crossed to Mills but his header was saved.

In injury time the tension of not finishing the game off caused a comment to come from the Welling bench that the referee didn’t like and he sent the Wings manager to the changing rooms.

Once the game resumed, Welling saw out the remaining three minutes to claim a well earned victory.
