Charlton boss Adkins: We used clips to show where players went wrong against Cheltenham

Nigel Adkins has shown video clips to his Charlton Athletic players to try and eradicate the mistakes they made in last weekend’s 2-1 loss to Cheltenham Town.

The Addicks have made their worst start to a season in 15 years and head to Wycombe Wanderers on Saturday.

They follow up with a Tuesday night fixture at Gillingham before Portsmouth come to The Valley next weekend.

Adkins said: “Everyone is working hard and we’ve got to respond from the disappointment of last weekend’s result, and especially the first half. But we’ve had a good meeting about that and the lads have applied themselves really well during the course of the week.

“In our defensive shape we were far too expansive. We need to be compact and we showed some clips to the players in our debrief. Five yards further up and five yards further in, we’re compact and we can go and get after the team. We’ve put that one to bed and moved on to the next one.

“Gareth Ainsworth has done a great job. He’s been at Wycombe a long time. They are a very tough team to play against. It’s going to be a battle.”

Charlton sold out their initial allocation of 2,300 tickets for the Gillingham match, with a further 200 expected to sell out.

“The fans have been great. They’re right behind the club and the team – you can see it when we’re doing well. It really lifts everybody. And I totally understand when things aren’t going well, everyone is entitled to vent their frustration. I totally get it.”

Did Nige watch those same clips and see the players who didn’t try a leg and the fact his shape and tactics were so far wrong first half? How did it take him til halftime to make any changes? By the time the players made their mistakes the game was lost to a weak poor Cheltenham team
