Macauley Bonne: My head was turned as soon as I got told QPR wanted me – I took my chance at Charlton
Macauley Bonne has admitted his “head was turned” as soon as he heard QPR wanted to sign him.
The 24-year-old striker made the switch to west London today – in a deal that is set to net Charlton Athletic around £2million.
QPR had multiple bids for the former Leyton Orient striker turned down but have now added him to their attacking ranks.
Bonne has signed a three-year contract.
Talking to QPR’s official website, he said: “As soon as I heard they were interested my head was turned straight away. I’ll even say it – that my head was turned.
“It’s been a few weeks now, it went backward and forward.
“I want to go [was his first reaction when told QPR wanted him]. As much as I loved playing at Charlton, QPR should be a Premier League side.”
Bonne scored 11 goals for the Addicks last season. Injuries and the exit of Lyle Taylor when football resumed saw him handed more starts than expected.
Charlton manager Lee Bowyer had described him as a project when he arrived in a £200,000 switch from the O’s in 2019.
“I got thrown in the deep end,” said Bonne. “Once you get thrown in you take your chance. If I didn’t take it and done what I did I probably wouldn’t be sat here today signed for a club like QPR.
“It is credit to myself for handling it. I criticise myself – I probably should’ve scored a few more goals – but I’m happy and proud where I’ve got to.”
Asked about his targets, Bonne replied: “To be better than last season. I want to score more goals and just be better than last season.”

Mac, as a Charlton fan, I really wish you all the best. You never really fulfilled your potential at Charlton and were unreliable in front of goal. The Millwall game we lost 1-0 was the worst I’ve seen you play and in the end it cost us relegation. I hope you can become more consistent and clinical at QPR. Best of luck.
