Former Charlton chief executive Peter Varney extends his role with Millwall Community Trust until 2024

Peter Varney has extended his agreement with the Millwall Community Trust until October 2024.

The former Charlton Athletic chief executive is the executive vice chairman of MCT.

The MCT are set to be involved with Millwall Football Club on the planned redevelopment of The Den.

The trust’s four-year business plan has outlined their plans to increase the number of community programmes they run with a particular focus on anti-social behaviour, knife crime, poverty and obesity.

Varney had been helping Andrew Barclay try and push through a takeover deal for Charlton Athletic. But Barclay withdrew his interest when he could not reach an agreement with Roland Duchatelet to also buy The Valley and training ground in Sparrows Lane, New Eltham.

Varney then advised Thomas Sandgaard on how best to open lines of communication to acquire the League One Addicks at the end of last month – telling the US-based Danish businessman to talk to the South London Press about his desire to thrash out an agreement.

Sandgaard has freely admitted that going public in the media paid off as he took control of the club and lifted their transfer embargo.

Varney, who was CEO at Charlton during their successful period in the Premier League as well as vice-chairman when they won the League One title in 2012, announced yesterday that he would not be taking on a role under Sandgaard.

“Thomas has made clear that he will be very hands on as chairman, CEO and sole director,” said Varney in a post on his Twitter account. “And he will run the club day to day.

“I met Thomas for 90 minutes yesterday (Tuesday) and I appreciate his genuine appreciation of the role I played in his acquisition of the club.

“After all the trauma associated with [Roland] Duchatelet and ESI ownerships, we finally have stability in the club. And in Thomas Sandgaard we have an owner that the fans can relate to and one who has big ambitions for the club.”
