If you want to have a cycle in Brixton, it’s now become a lot easier

Seven new docking stations for 200 bikes, so-called ‘Boris Bikes’, now officially called Santander Cycles, have been installed on the streets.

Councillor Jennifer Brathwaite, Lambeth cabinet member for environment & housing, said: “I’m delighted that Santander Cycles are finally here in Brixton.

“This is something we’ve been working on for a long time with Transport for London (TfL) as we continue to make it as easy as possible to cycle around Lambeth.

She claims: “The borough is fast becoming the most cycle-friendly in London and this is another way people can start travelling more actively, improving health and well-being, and contributing to cleaner air – something we’re passionate about.

“We will continue to campaign for similar cycle hire options further South in the borough so that even more residents can benefit.”

Santander Cycles can be hired annually for £90 a year or for £2 per day.

Michael Smith, managing director of Brixton BID, said: “We welcomes the Santander Cycles, which can only be positive for this vibrant area, giving visitors and locals more ways to get in and around Brixton.

“This introduction should also deliver healthier fitness options, reducing the number of cars and improving air quality.”

The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “It’s great news our popular Santander Cycles scheme has expanded to the streets of Brixton.

“I have no doubt that the bright red bikes will quickly become a familiar sight across Brixton, as they help 10s of thousands more Londoners and visitors travel easily across the area.

“It’s yet another boost for our record-breaking scheme and for our work to make cycling more accessible, improve London’s air quality and tackle congestion.”

With more than 11,500 bikes at more than 750 docking stations, the Santander Cycles scheme now reaches from Camden in the north to Brixton in the South, Hammersmith in the West and Queen Elizabeth Park in the east.

The docking stations have been filled with the new generation of Santander Cycles which offer riders improved handling, visibility and comfort, and improved technological functions including inbuilt Bluetooth and the capacity for GPS technology, launched in October last year.

The docking stations are located at:

  • St. John’s Crescent, Brixton
  • Ferndale Road, Brixton
  • Saltoun Road, Brixton
  • Cranmer Road, Stockwell
  • Normandy Road, Stockwell
  • Wynne Road, Stockwell
  • Sidney Road, Stockwell
