Kensington and Chelsea residents urged to reuse and recycle

Savvy residents are getting extra help to keep their broken possessions out of landfill in a week of free repairs and workshops.

Last year residents in Kensington and Chelsea threw away more than 1,000 tonnes of clothes and textiles in their bins or as recycling.

And they could be shelling out for new items when they could actually be repaired.

The week of events is part of Kensington and Chelsea’s response to ‘London Repair Week’, which runs until Saturday, to save items from the bin.

The council decided to team up with green group London Recycles to help people give their broken items a new lease of life.

Events include a free online craft and design taster session between 6pm and 6.45pm today with north Kensington’s Goldfinger Factory which must be booked via Eventbrite.

There’s also a chance to get any niggling bike repairs sorted with a free bike repair clinic with Dr Bike at the Earl’s Court Road junction with Kensington High Street between 4pm and 7pm tomorrow.

And there’s also 10 per cent off all electronic repairs at iSmash stores all week using promo code KC10 to help give technical equipment a new lease of life.

The council said Thimble in Thackeray Street offers expertise in mending clothes, while Cyclecare in Earl’s Court Road will also help people get their bikes in tip top condition ahead of winter.

Residents can also take unwanted household items such as TVs, fridges and freezers for repair and reuse at the Rework reuse and recycling centre in Smugglers Way.
