Millwall boss has message for his players ahead of trip to Wycombe Wanderers

Gary Rowett has warned his Millwall side they will need to have the perfect attitude and approach to Saturday’s trip to newly-promoted Wycombe.

The Chairboys won promotion to the Championship via the League One play-offs and have the smallest budget in the division.

They have yet to score a goal or take a point and are only kept off the foot of the table by Sheffield Wednesday, who started with a 12-point deduction.

Wycombe manager Gareth Ainsworth was in the running for the Lions hotseat when Neil Harris quit in October of last year – but lost out to Rowett.

He has won two promotions with Wanderers to take them into the Championship for the first time in their history.

“I know Gareth quite well,” said the Millwall manager. “I played with him. He is a great character and has done an absolutely unbelievable job at Wycombe.

“You can see the camaraderie of the group of players and their spirit on the pitch at Wembley was fantastic to see.

“They have had a tough start but like any side that comes up and has a tough start you turn up to the next one desperate to get that one big performance that pushes you off.

“I saw them give Brentford a good run for their money in the cup and I saw them push Swansea in the second half. It’s up to us to go out and perform. We’re not in the position that we can go out and just expect to beat any side without being at 100 per cent. I said that last season and I don’t expect that to change this season.

“At Swansea we didn’t do the right things twice defensively and got punished for it. We can’t afford to do that.”
