By Tom Hussey

A children’s activity firm has won a highly commended award at a national ceremony.

Phonics Stars Bexley and Greenwich, which hosts educational fun for families, beat tough competition to claim second prize in the category.

The awards celebrate the UK’s best children’s clubs and classes, their leaders and volunteers.

Phonics Stars Bexley and Greenwich were highly commended in the Most-Loved Academic category at the What’s On 4 Kid’s Activities Awards 2020.

Louise Matthews, 35, of Sidcup, who set up Phonic Stars Bexley and Greenwich in June 2019, picked up the award.

She said: “To know that the families and children we meet across the two boroughs in our public sessions and our preschool sessions have voted us as their Most-Loved activity means the world to me.

“It has been an honour to receive this award and I look forward to the coming year ahead.”

More than 50,000 votes were cast by parents and carers across all categories.

Ms Matthews, a former primary school teacher, said: “Moving away from the classroom was a huge challenge, but I’m happy I did.”
