New food waste and recycling bins for Hammersmith and Fulham

New food waste and recycling bins are being rolled out to neighbourhoods across Hammersmith, Fulham and College Park.
Hammersmith and Fulham council said a limited number of households in the three areas will start receiving new set of bins, which include:
- A seven-litre food waste caddy for indoor use
- A 23-litre food waste container to be placed outside for collection
- One 140-litre black refuse bin
- One 240-litre green recycling bin
It will come as an important boost to the borough’s low record on recycling.
In 2018/19, Hammersmith and Fulham was rated the 10th worst local authority for recycling in the country. Just 24 per cent of household waste was either recycled or composted in that year, although the borough ranked higher than Wandsworth and Westminster councils.
A full list of all the streets that will come under the new system can be found on the council’s website, under the tab called: “Where is the new service being rolled out to first?”
Collection days will remain the same for households getting the new bins and food waste service.
The council also said it will initially provide each household with two free rolls of compostable caddy liners to get people started.
Residents are asked not to put liquids in the food waste caddies, which are suitable for fish, meat and bones, leftovers and plate scrapings, bread, rice and pasta, fruit and vegetable peelings, teabags and coffee grounds.
The council contracts Serco Plc to carry out its refuse and recycling. The waste is taken to the Western Riverside Waste authority facility in Smugglers Way, Wandsworth.
