Lewisham Local Card gives people up to 50 per cent off at 500 local businesses

A loyalty card which gives people discounts of up to 50 per cent at more than 500 businesses has been relaunched.

The Lewisham Local Card, available from Tuesday, is available to local people at a cost of just £20.

It is issued by the charity Lewisham Local, which aims to connect different communities in the borough, and tries to make Lewisham more accessible for everyone.

Before the relaunch, the card was only available to those who gave their time or skills for the greater good of the borough.

Lewisham Local Card lead Paula Segre said: “The innovations in the Lewisham Local Card allow for a more inclusive network of community supporters, local businesses and community projects.

“Not only are members able to advocate for the local economy and fund good causes, but they can also save money while doing so.”

Cllr Jonathan Slater commended Lewisham Local for doing its bit in supporting independent businesses in the borough.

He said: “Lewisham council is proud of the work that Lewisham Local has been doing to support independent businesses in the borough.

“Charities and community volunteers have been vital in helping us protect vulnerable residents during the pandemic and we are delighted to promote Lewisham Local’s Community Fund.

“Now more than ever it is so important to shop locally and protect our local economy, and the discounts offered through this scheme offer a real incentive to do so!”

Sophie McMillan, 35, owns the London Velo cafe in Deptford High Street, which accepts the card.

Ms McMillan welcomed the relaunch, saying she was excited about the potential business the scheme will attract.

She said: “We are looking forward to welcoming new and returning customers.

“Given the circumstances it’s great to be open and hope the launch goes well.”

Half of the funds raised go towards covering the costs of running the card, and the other half goes into a Community Fund given to local charities and projects.
