Charlton extend winning run to five games as Bowyer outfoxes Portsmouth boss Jackett

Portmouth 0 Charlton 2

Goals from Jonny Williams and Chuks Aneke gave Charlton a fifth consecutive League One win with a 2-0 victory at promotion rivals Portsmouth – as they climb to fifth in the table.

Lee Bowyer’s side had to play the last few minutes of the match without a recognised centre-back but kept a sixth straight clean sheet and restricted Pompey to only a few chances.

Charlton survived an early scare when Marcus Harness found home winger Ronan Curtis who hooked over from six yards.

Charlton took the lead after 25 minutes, when left-back Ian Maatsen got behind his marker and his cross was stabbed home by Wales international Williams – playing at the top of a midfield diamond – for his first Charlton goal.

The visitors’ Omar Bogle appeared to be brought down by Sean Raggett but referee Carl Boyeson refused the appeals.

But Paul Smyth’s inviting cross to the far post allowed Aneke to nod home and clinch the points with 10 minutes to go.
