Charlton midfielder Albie Morgan determined to keep place in Lee Bowyer’s side after winning manager’s trust with recent performances

Charlton midfielder Albie Morgan has endured some spells in and out of the Addicks side in the last couple of seasons – so he’s pleased that boss Lee Bowyer has rewarded his recent strides forward with consecutive league starts.
The 20-year-old has started in each of the Addicks’ last four games in all competitions, singled out for praise by Bowyer after the manager had previously highlighted areas of Morgan’s game that needed some improvement.
Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Gillingham, a local affair for Rochester-born Morgan, saw the academy graduate impress in the middle of the park and he said he’s happy to have caught the eye of the manager over the last few weeks.
“Seeing [Bowyer’s comments] has given me a lot of confidence to come onto the pitch and perform week in, week out,” explained Morgan.
“That’s what I want to continue to do right until the end of the season. I don’t want to keep coming in and out the squad like I have done in previous seasons. I think by me doing what I’m doing I can really stamp my ground in the team and hopefully keep getting the games.
“I’m feeling good, feeling confident. Another game, another start. I’m taking each week as it comes. Hopefully I can keep performing and doing what the manger wants from me. If I can do that I can keep getting his trust, keep getting games. That’s what I want. I’m glad and feeling really good at the moment and so is the team. Hopefully we can keep this run going of not losing.
“Playing alongside players like Ben Watson and Darren Pratley, people who have played at the top level is a great help for me. I can watch them during training, during the games, even around the building. Take different bits from what they do and how they stay professional. It’s great to learn from people like that. Myself, I can just watch on and try to do things properly and as best as I can.
“Positioning, where I need to be, where I need to go, where I can get on the ball. People like Pratley and Watson, they play in my position. They know a lot from their experience as a player. I’m open to listening to them and them telling me what to do.”
