Millwall injury update – Mahoney and Bennett set to undergo scans with Romeo return timescale not clear yet

Millwall duo Connor Mahoney and Mason Bennett are both set for scans this week on quad injuries.

Winger Mahoney missed Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Cardiff City while attacker Bennett was forced off in the second half.

Mahlon Romeo also sat out the visit of the Bluebirds with a foot problem.

Lions manager Gary Rowett said: “With Mahlon we will just have to let it settle down to see where we are with it.

“There is no real timeframe on it. He could be available this week or it could take another two-three weeks.

“Connor would’ve started the game and he did all the shape for it. We were just doing some set-pieces – he was taking corners along with four or five other players. He whipped a corner in and felt his quad straight away and collapsed to the floor in a bit of discomfort.

“He will probably get a scan either today or tomorrow and we’ll find out what it is. It is a real frustrating one, because it was innocuous, It is something he’s probably done a million times and not got a problem.

“Sometimes you need the area to settle down to show damage. If you do it straight away then it can not accurately reflect what damage there is. There are a number of reasons why you wait before you scan it.

“Mason sprinted late on in the game and felt something in his quad. It doesn’t look quite as serious as Connor. But again I’ve genuinely no idea until we see inside his leg.

“I imagine he’ll get a scan before the middle of the week. He’ll have had a day or two for it to settle. We also assess how he feels. For all we know he might come in feeling fine or may come in feeling horrendous.”

Billy Mitchell also suffered a setback last Tuesday on his comeback, suffering a fresh hamstring injury which is likely to keep him out for up to 10 weeks.

Millwall have one of the smaller squads in the Championship.

“We needed a bit of good fortune and to make good decisions to get the players through this period because you are only one, two or three injuries away from really reducing your options,” said Rowett.

“But it’s part of the game and something we’ve got to cope with. I’m not the type to start bemoaning it – I’d rather try and find a solution than use it as a bit of an excuse as to why we haven’t won as many games. It’s nothing to do with it.

“The frustration is that if we were talking about at the end of a five or six-game run it could be something you could quantify. We’ll sit down, the whole staff, and see if we can find out why or if there is any reason we’ve had a couple of injuries.

“It’s how I try to work. It’s not a case of fingerpointing, it is about working out why we’ve had three muscle injuries in a week and making sure it doesn’t happen again. For a club like ourselves it can have a big influence on our season.

“Hutch missed the first few games last season and it had a big impact on what we were trying to do. We are quite tight on key players and as a squad we can;t just chuck a number of options in there.”
