Nasty gash forces Charlton Athletic striker off – as boss explains Conor Washington absence for Ipswich game
Paul Smyth was forced off in Charlton’s 2-0 win at Ipswich Town with a nasty cut to his left leg.
The Addicks striker was substituted and taken off the pitch on a cart. His replacement Omar Bogle netted his first goal for the club just two minutes later.
Smyth will be a doubt for Wednesday’s match against Milton Keynes at The Valley.
Bowyer said: “I think it’s just a gash. I’m not sure if the lad trod on him by accident or when he’s slid he’s caught his stud. I don’t know how he’s done it but he’s got a big gash.
“Apparently it’s not very pretty.”
Conor Washington was not part of the Addicks squad for the fixture at Portman Road.
Asked about the Northern Ireland international, Bowyer replied: “Just a minor injury. Just one of them where we don’t need to take any risks. It’s a long season and if you risk people then you end up losing them for longer.
“We’ve got good players to rotate so it was the right decision to leave him at home. Hopefully he’ll be okay for Wednesday.”
Bogle is off the mark for the South Londoners in his ninth outing.
“It’s important because all the other strikers had scored, and he was the only one who hadn’t,” said Bowyer.
“I felt for him because he worked so hard for the team. He’s been getting bruises and batterings doing that first 60 minutes before Chuks comes off the bench. A lot of that hard work goes unnoticed by a lot of people – but I notice it.
“Now he can move on.”
