Daniel Dubois has been a wrecking ball – but now Greenwich heavyweight has to rebuild his own career

Daniel Dubois has been a wrecking ball in the heavyweight division – but now he is facing a rebuilding job after suffering a first career loss.

The Greenwich fighter was counted out in the 10th round of his domestic showdown against Joe Joyce last night in Westminster.

Dubois’ left eye was swollen shut – damage inflicted by his opponent’s jab – but the finish leaves questions.

A Joyce jab landed and the South Londoner paused for a second before dropping to his right knee, remaining there until he was counted out.

Dubois’ record drops to 15-1 and he has lost his British and Commonwealth titles. The vacant European title was also at stake. There is every chance he could get a quick chance to regain some of those belts as Joyce will look to muscle his way into a world title shot.

Joyce always looked a huge step up in class with Dubois sweeping aside a succession of poor opponents in the shape of Richard Lartey, Ebenezer Tetteh and Kyotaro Fujimoto.

And the Putney man, an Olympic silver medallist, had the granite chin to withstand Dubois’ bombs.

Dubois was leading on two of the three judges’ scorecards at the time of the stoppage. But the damage to his eye and Joyce’s blows seemed to suck the fight out of him.

“He caught me with a good jab – I couldn’t see out of the eye,” said Dubois. “It just happens.”

Joyce said: “Daniel has got some power but I’ve felt power like that before. With my experience I’ve learnt to ride them.”
