South London shoppers urged to stay safe in peak Christmas shopping weekend

Shoppers are being urged to stay safe this weekend to save lives and London’s businesses, amid the threat of extra restrictions in the capital.

London boroughs are calling on all Londoners to be extra safe and vigilant this weekend to save lives and jobs.

A statement from Southwark council said: “This weekend is critical, with many shoppers, retailers and those in the hospitality sector experiencing high numbers of interactions in the busy but essential period of Christmas shopping.

“This has been a challenging year for London’s businesses and they need to keep trading. Without support from shoppers, these businesses will not survive.

“While it is vital we all do our bit to support our local businesses, the latest data shows that rates of coronavirus infection are on the rise in most London boroughs, including in people aged 60 and over who are most at risk of serious illness or death. If cases continue to rise, the capital will be moved into Tier 3 with greater restrictions to protect residents from the virus.

“Tier 3 restrictions include the closing of all hospitality settings such as bars, pubs, cafes and restaurants except for takeaway, delivery and click and collect.”

Councillor Stephanie Cryan, cabinet member for jobs, culture and skills , said: “All of our businesses, large and small, have worked diligently throughout the pandemic to ensure shops and restaurants are Covid-secure. This weekend, we want residents to get behind the message to shop safely, so they can stay open. We are asking everyone  – shoppers and businesses, to make an extra effort this weekend to minimise the risk of further increases in rates of infection, so we can try to avoid the severe restrictions that will follow if rates keep rising.

“We have to look after our local high streets and businesses whilst protecting public health by making sure we shop extra safely this weekend. If we do that, we will save lives and the jobs that could sadly be lost if London went into Tier 3 and they had to close.  We’re reminding everyone to wear a mask when out and about in crowded places, on public transport and in shops, to keeps hands clean and make space for others. Small businesses are the lifeblood of Southwark – let’s act together to keep everyone safe and protect the businesses we love.”
