Charlton 5 AFC Wimbledon 2 – Addicks produce second-half goal blitz to win derby

Charlton Athletic won for the first time since their fans have been allowed back in The Valley – with substitutes Chuks Aneke and Jonny Williams helping them come from behind against AFC Wimbledon.

The Addicks were trailing 2-1 when the duo were brought on – and both ended up on the scoresheet.

Williams had been taken off just 23 minutes after coming on in the previous weekend’s 1-1 draw at Shrewsbury. This time he put the SE7 outfit 3-2 up with his first goal at The Valley and only his second goal in an Addicks shirt.

Charlton had lost to Doncaster and Milton Keynes when they had live crowds and a third reverse looked on the cards until four goals in the final 26 minutes.

Charlton started with far more tempo and urgency than the had in their last outing in SE7 against Milton Keynes.

But arguably some of their attacking steam had been lost when they went 1-0 ahead on 37 minutes.

Jason Pearce produced an excellent ball through to release Washington on the left of the penalty box and he cut inside Terell Thomas, the defender’s attempt to block his shot only helping it past Connal Trueman.

But Pigott produced a brilliant finish to level things five minutes later as he curled into the top right corner of the net. There was no celebration against his former side.

Charlton paid the price for poor marking as the visitors inflicted further damage on the stroke of half-time. Daniel Csoka was unmarked in the box as he headed home Alex Woodyard’s cross.

Wimbledon had other chances in the first period with Chris Gunter clearing off his own goal-line while Ben Amos needed to save with his legs from Jack Rudoni.

Trueman pushed away a stinging Ben Watson volley early in the second half but Addicks manager Lee Bowyer made a double change in the 53rd minute as he brought on Aneke and Williams for Alex Gilbey and Omar Bogle.

Forster-Caskey was on hand to convert when Aneke’s 64th minute shot was only parried by Trueman.

And two minutes later Williams netted for the first time in SE7. Gunter supplied a low cross from the right and the Wales international met it first time, guiding his finish across the Dons stopper.

Aneke then got his sixth goal of the season – all after coming off the bench. A Ben Purrington cross was flicked on by Williams with a Wimbledon defender miscontrolling – it allowed the striker to shift on to his left side and smash through the legs of Trueman.

Purrington made it 5-2 in stoppage time. Williams’ effort came off the right upright and the full-back was there to finish off.
