Bradshaw and Bennett on target as Millwall end wait for a Championship win with impressive display at Bristol City

Millwall ended a 10-game run without a Championship victory with goals from Tom Bradshaw and Mason Bennett seeing off Bristol City.

The Lions badly needed a response after a poor showing in Saturday’s 3-0 reverse at Middlesbrough.

Four of the five victories collected by Gary Rowett’s side this season have been on the road.

Tom Bradshaw – one of four changes from the weekend – put them ahead in the 18th minute. Ryan Leonard’s shot came off the foot of the striker to beat City keeper Daniel Bentley.

Bennett had an excellent chance to add to their advantage but could not keep his effort down after being picked out at the back post by Jed Wallace.

Just before that the visitors were fortunate when Nakhi Wells free-kick was pushed on to the post by Bartosz Bialkowski, with appeals from City’s players that the ball had crossed the line before the keeper claimed at the second attempt.

You wondered if City could be so ineffectual in the second half against a Millwall side who pressed excellently through Jon Dadi Bodvarsson, Bradshaw and Bennett. The answer was yes.

It felt like the home side were there for the taking – and the Lions added a second goal in the 68th minute. Leonard did excellently to win the ball but Bennett still had a lot to do when he picked up possession, curling an excellent right-footed finish past Bentley.

It ended a 17-game wait for Bennett to get on the scoresheet and was his first of the campaign.

Famara Diedhiou had only been on the pitch for 20 minutes when he was dismissed for two bookable offences.

Jed Wallace burst through in the closing stages but was denied by Bentley.
