Commuters at Crofton Park to hear if they will get more trains
Commuters on a “Cinderella” line want improved services at their poorly-served station.
Travellers have campaigned for the last two years to improve trains from Crofton Park to Sevenoaks, Blackfriars and St Pancras.
The line currently has just two trains an hour off peak – the same as to Paris, York and Edinburgh.
The Zone Three station has fewer trains now than it did in 1956.
A Cinderella Line (ACL) has been lobbying rail operators Thameslink to provide vital extra services to ease the overcrowding on the route.
It is staging a public meeting on Saturday where the operators will announce if the campaign has been successful.
ACL chairman Michael Woodhead said: “We are pleased that we had the highest number of responses to the consultation out of the 140 stations involved, and as a result we look forward to seeing an increased number of services in the new timetables that will start from May.
“One of the key issues we face is a curved platform, creating huge gaps when trying to board the train. This makes it difficult for disabled or elderly passengers to board or those with young children. The Department for Transport needs to take urgent action to provide platform humps to make it easier and safer to board to prevent a serious accident happening on our route between St Pancras and Crofton Park.
“We have had lot of support from our MP Vicky Foxcroft, who has set up meetings with the train operators and lobbied with us to improve things, but Lewisham council could do more on this to join things up.”
The meeting is from 2-3pm at the Rivoli Ballroom, Crofton Park and will be chaired by Lewisham Deptford MP Vicky Foxcroft. There will be representatives from Thameslink and Network Rail.
