Christmas bin changes in Wandsworth announced
By Sian Bayley, local democracy reporter
While things will certainly not be normal this Christmas, one thing that will stay the same is the need to have your rubbish collected.
But councils tend to change bin collection dates over the festive period to allow their staff to take some well-deserved time off on the bank holidays.
The last thing you need to worry about this year is when you’ll be able to get rid of all the wrapping paper, bottles and turkey bones clogging up your house.
So we’ve rounded up all the important changes.
In Wandsworth, your rubbish and recycling will be collected on your normal collection day over the Christmas period, apart from Christmas Day (Friday December 25, 2020) and New Year’s Day (Friday January 1, 2021).
The revised collection days over the Christmas period are as follows:
Normal collection day | Revised collection day |
---|---|
Friday 25 December 2020 | Saturday 26 December 2020 |
Friday 1 January 2021 | Saturday 2 January 2021 |
There is also a free collection service for natural Christmas trees from Monday 4 to Friday January 15, 2021.
Residents should put out their real Christmas tree for collection on their normal rubbish and recycling day in this period, alongside their rubbish and recycling sacks, not on the street.
The trees will then be shredded and sent for composting.
The council has warned that if trees are dumped on the street blocking pavements or parking spaces, the pick-up crews have to be diverted away from their scheduled collections to deal with this problem, causing delays and inconvenience.
A different collection lorry will collect trees, so residents are asked not to worry if their bins are emptied before the tree is collected.
Residents can also take their tree to the household waste recycling centre at Smugglers Way.
