Hockey: Wimbledon third after 4-1 win over East Grinstead
Wimbledon are third in the Men’s Hockey League Premier Division after a 4-1 win over East Grinstead last weekend.
The Dons were missing Ian Sloan and Phil Roper, Great Britain captain and vice-captain respectively, as well as Henry Weir due to international duty.
But the South Londoners underlined the depth of talent in the squad as they still won comfortably.
Peter Small tapped in at the far post on 13 minutes to open the scoring. Ben Arnold, now fully recovered from injury and in sparkling form, scored the goal of the match on 32 minutes. Swivelling with his back to goal on the edge of the D, he spun and shot into the far corner of the goal.
A flowing move up the left flank with Johnnie Kinder, Iain Gordon and Simon Mantell all involved saw the ball moved into the D, culminating in several close-range shots on goal. The result was a penalty stroke flashed in by Iain Lewers. Two minutes later on 40 minutes, another fine move produced a penalty corner which Ed Horler drag flicked inside the far post.
Wimbledon are at home to Holcombe this weekend.
