Millwall boss: We explore transfer options all year round – not just when a window opens

Gary Rowett is expecting Millwall to show “a little bit of ambition” in the January transfer window.

The Lions can do business from January 1.

Young striker Troy Parrott has been linked with a return to Tottenham with the Republic of Ireland international not commanding a starting spot in recent weeks.

And West Brom’s Kenneth Zohore has missed most of the campaign since his temporary switch due to a calf injury. His deal only runs until the middle of January.

Rowett has revealed he was in a lengthy recruitment meeting on Tuesday discussing potential moves.

He said: “We’ve been assessing our options for the last month, but you do that all through the year. People tend to think you get to the window and start looking at it, but we look at it all year round. We constantly monitor it, we have a list of players who we like and have contact with certain agents – they’ll ring you before January.

“We’ve had a long recruitment meeting on Tuesday on Zoom – about two hours – going through our options and what we want to do.

“It’s a big window for us, it’s an important window – it’s a window in which I’d like to freshen things up a little bit. We’re at a point where that would be a good thing, to freshen some options up and maybe one or two players who haven’t played much could potentially go and play more football elsewhere – that’s normal.

“It’s a window where we’re certainly going to be trying to show a little bit of ambition and bring some good players in. I think there could be quite a few moving parts, just for different reasons. It’s probably not worth going into but there are potentially lots of moving parts – you look at the loan of Ken [Zohore] and he hasn’t been fit. There is a hope he’ll get back and play some games – but obviously that is up in the air.

“So essentially there could be a lot of moving parts in it. Hopefully that gives us the opportunity, whichever way we look at it, to strengthen the squad in a different way.”
