Exclusive: Charlton Athletic midfielder cleared to leave on free transfer

Charlton Athletic midfielder George Lapslie has been told he can leave on a free transfer.

The 23-year-old is on loan at Mansfield Town and has been in impressive form for the League Two outfit, netting five times and claiming two assists

Lapslie made the switch to the Stags in the middle of October and has been nigh-on an ever-present as he has clocked up 16 appearances.

The Addicks academy product is due to be out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer allowed Lapslie and Erhun Oztumer to make temporary exits as he felt both needed regular first-team football.

But the South London Press has been told that Lapslie has been cleared to make a permanent exit from SE7.

In total he has played 54 matches for the South London club.

  • Not so sure that is a good move. Could do with his ‘legs’ in midfield at times, especially at League 1 and 2 level. Perhaps it is to free up some money because of this ridiculous EFL ‘cap’ that they have implemented !! I certainly wish him well, he has looked good on the EFL highlights show. Perhaps Charlton will be able to bring in a player with experience, but not someone too old. We have enough of them in the team at present and I do not mean that in a derogatory way. A blend of youth and experience is always necessary if a team is to be successful..

It would be if we got him on our wage bill, he’s a good player at league level.
