AFC Wimbledon-Wigan match postponed – with Latics reporting several positive Covid-19 cases
AFC Wimbledon’s home game against Wigan Athletic on Wednesday is off – with the Latics reporting several positive Covid-19 tests.
The Dons have posted the following statement on their website: “Wigan informed the EFL that they would be unable to fulfil their next two fixtures following several positive Covid-19 tests and the requirements for players and staff to self-isolate, as per EFL and government guidance in order to mitigate against the risk of further infection.
“The circumstances surrounding the postponements will now be subject of an investigation, in accordance with EFL regulations.
“We will announce a rearranged date for the Wigan game in due course.”
It is the second time the fixture has been postponed – initially due to AFC Wimbledon experiencing a Covid-19 outbreak in November.
The Dons had revealed before Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Lincoln City that they had cases again but manager Glyn Hodges claimed the EFL deemed them to have a “big enough squad” to cope with their absentees.
Hodges said: “There’s no threshold [for matches to be called off]. However big your squad is, we’ve added our U23s to our matchday list because they play in the EFL trophy. That qualifies them to play for the team. It can be [counter-productive] but we have to accept it. Other clubs do it – I think it was Lincoln who played previously and only had three subs. They’re probably not quite ready for this level yet, but it depends on your numbers. We accept that – it’s happened before. I think some people haven’t been able to name their full quota of subs.
