Max Meyer released by Crystal Palace – German never lived up to the significant hype

Crystal Palace have released Max Meyer – six months before his contract in SE25 was due to expire.

The German arrived to significant hype in the summer of 2018, a free agent after his contract at Schalke 04 expired, but he never really lived up to those expectations.

Meyer made 56 appearances for the Eagles and scored twice.

Palace would have been happy to offload the attacking midfielder, capped four times by his country, in previous transfer windows but his hefty wages did not make that possible.

Eagles manager Roy Hodgson conceded earlier this month that he expected Meyer to want a move away.

His only action this season had been a 90-minute runout in the EFL Cup.

“Max has been the perfect professional – he has done all his work,” said Hodgson. “He’s hardly missed a day’s training.

“He is a player of a certain type. He wants to play and needs to play. It’s pretty obvious at the moment with the competition for places we have got here and the players I’ve been using that he has been marginalised.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Max is knocking on the door to move on. If that’s the case I would have to reluctantly agree he’s not been given the chances here to show what he can do – as he would like. If someone is going to give him that chance it would have to be considered.

“But at the moment, as far as I know, he is still a Crystal Palace player and will continue to be so until someone else comes in and takes him from us.”
