Charlton boss Lee Bowyer delighted to see his side get back to basics during 1-0 win at Milton Keynes

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer applauded his side for getting back to basics this evening as they ran out 1-0 winners at Milton Keynes.

Liverpool loanee Liam Millar struck the only goal of the game, his first in an Addicks shirt, 18 minutes into the first half as the South Londoners then held on to claim just their second win in 12 outings.

They also kept only their second clean sheet in that run to secure a vital three points that maintains their spot in League One’s top six – albeit having played more games than all of the sides around them.

Bowyer said: “A very professional, gritty performance. We were good from start to finish. Our shape was good, our work rate, our commitment, our fight, from start to finish was excellent.

“We got back to doing the basics right. They’re human beings, they’re going to make mistakes. The most important thing is that we got a clean sheet against a very good MK side. They score a lot of goals. Our shape was excellent. Everything that we planned to do worked. You can’t afford to carry any players and tonight you could see that we didn’t carry anyone. Everyone put a shift in.

“They won their individual battles. I’ve got Liam Millar, in the 88th minute, defending a cross at the far post outstandingly, like a seasoned full-back. Then, the next second, he’s sprinting up the other end. He was outstanding tonight. If it was on a better pitch, he sets up Ronnie [Schwartz] as well for a tap in. It takes a bobble as he goes to cross it to Ronnie and it’s unlucky. I thought he was good.

“If we had just taken care of the ball, when we’d first won it back, we’d set little traps and pressed and won the ball. Then, it was just that next pass, or the second pass, we were a bit sloppy. Again, the pitch was poor so I said to the players: ‘I’ll give you the benefit of the doubt.’ But if we had taken care of that first or second pass, we’d have scored a lot more.

“Even first half, before we scored, there was a couple of occasions where I thought here we go, goal. But we didn’t make the right decision or the pass was wrong. But overall, I’m happy.”
