AFC Wimbledon 0 Milton Keynes 2 – Woeful run shows no signs of stopping

BY DANIEL MARSH

AFC Wimbledon’s horrific run of form continued with a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Milton Keynes.

It’s a result which means the Dons have taken just two points from the last 33 available – a run which has seen them slide into the League One relegation zone in recent weeks.

Two goals in as many minutes from Cameron Jerome and Matt Sorinola were enough to condemn Wimbledon to defeat in SW19.

It was the hosts who made the stronger start, with Nesta Guinness-Walker forcing a fingertip save from Andrew Fisher inside the opening two minutes.

Guinness-Walker was in the thick of the action again a few minutes later, as he fed Jack Rudoni on the left-hand side. He almost caught the Milton Keynes keeper out at his near post with a wayward cross as the Dons pushed for an opener.

The visitors were a whisker away from finding the net through a 10th minute corner, only for Louis Thompson’s low strike to trickle agonisingly wide of Sam Walker’s far post.

Rudoni went even closer on the half-hour mark, as his scuffed effort from a deep corner was cleared off the line.

Milton Keynes should have taken the lead right on the stroke of the interval. Darnell Johnson horribly undercooked his backpass towards goal – gifting the veteran Jerome a golden opportunity. But he fluffed his lines, with a horror touch allowing Walker to rescue Wimbledon.

Jerome atoned for that error after the break, as he helped the visitors break the deadlock on the hour-mark.

He drove at the Dons defence and cut the ball back into a crowded penalty area for Matt O’Riley to slot home.

Milton Keynes doubled their advantage just two minutes later.

Substitute Sorinola picked up the ball on the left-hand side and saw a speculative effort from range loop up and over Sam Walker, hitting the inside of both posts before trickling in after a subtle deflection. It was the young full-back’s first touch since coming on a couple of minutes earlier.

Glyn Hodges reacted with a triple substitution, introducing Ethan Chislett, Paul Osew and Zach Robinson in a desperate attempt to turn the tide and claw their way back into the match.

But the Dons failed to muster up any response, as their winless league run stretched to 11 games.
