Italian, all-female band Le Birette on stage tonight at Hootananny in Brixton

Who wouldn’t want the scintillating combination of ska and Mediterranean blood on a Friday night?

Italian, all-female band Le Birette will be owning the stage at Hootenanny in Brixton tonight playing their trademark fusion of Jamaican/ska and reggae from the 1960s and 1970s.

The band have been gaining increasing international acclaim over the past year and have opened for many big artists such as Johnny Osbourne, The Skatalites, The Aggrolites and the Uppertones.

Warming up for the female powerhouse are The Wise Bloods, a South London reggae, hip-hop and funk bad. They’ll be bringing deep grooves, hard horns and blessed harmonies to the Hootananny.

The band draws on influences from around the world and are forging a new sound that contributes to the current new wave of hip-hop influences.

Also on the bill are electric power trio Balothizer who are a relatively young band.

Their music fuses an amplified heavy electric sound with the rawness of Cretan music.
All that for free – well, so long as you rock up before 10pm.
