Charlton Athletic boss provides fitness update on Norwich City loanee

Akin Famewo is set to play another development game for Charlton on Monday – with manager Lee Bowyer insisting the on-loan Norwich defender would not have made a difference stopping some of Gillingham’s goals in today’s 3-2 loss.

The Addicks have struggled for results at The Valley in recent months and their reverse this afternoon dropped them out of League One’s top six.

Their defensive woes have coincided with Famewo and Ryan Inniss both being sidelined.

Famewo is the closer of the duo to a return.

Bowyer said: “Akin will play another game on Monday for the U23s. He played last week and came through 60 minutes.

“If Akin had been playing he would not have stopped that first or second goal. I think it’s a bit unfair to put that pressure on that lad. Jason Pearce didn’t really put a step wrong today.

“Akin was doing well when he was playing for us before, but he’s been out a long time.

“We’ve got to make sure we do the right thing with him. We’ll see how he comes through the U23s on Monday and then we’ll assess where he goes from there. I want him to be in the squad as quickly as possible but we’ll have to see how things go in the next few days.”
