Crystal Palace’s Jairo Riedewald frustrated by run of conceding early goals

Jairo Riedewald bemoaned more early goals conceded by Crystal Palace after their 3-0 defeat against Burnley.

Johann Berg Gudmundsson put the Clarets ahead on five minutes before Jay Rodriguez headed in the second goal a few minutes later. They account for the fourth and fifth goals that the Eagles have conceded in the opening 10 minutes of their last five matches.

Matt Lowton’s stunning volley two minutes into the second half killed any hope of a comeback.

Palace midfielder Riedewald told Palace TV: “It was a very tough afternoon. If you concede two goals after only eight minutes, it’s going to be a tough game to come back in.

“It was unbelievable. I think this is the third game in a row that we concede so early on and we just made it difficult for ourselves.

“I wish I knew the problem so I could solve it. We all spoke with each other after the Newcastle game and said it’s not good to concede that early. This was the third time it had happened already.

“It has to be better, especially for the first goal. We know in the Premier League that everyone wants to start quick, and if you concede so early it is going to be difficult.”

The South Londoners have also lost 18 of the last 20 matches that Wilfried Zaha has missed. Riedewald believes Palace are good enough to win without their star man.

“He’s a very high-quality player,” the Dutchman said.

“I know the record without Zaha is not that good and hopefully he will come back soon. With this team, we can get results and we have to bounce back next week.
