Lee Bowyer looking for a lift after Charlton’s Valley struggles continue with Burton setback
Lee Bowyer conceded that Charlton Athletic are not delivering the results expected after a 2-1 home loss to League One strugglers Burton Albion.
The Addicks have not won in seven matches at The Valley and their play-off hopes – already challenging before kick off – look even bleaker after they suffered a third successive loss in SE7.
Bowyer said: “It hurts me a lot when things like this happen. I’ll try and pick the players up. I’ll have to pick myself up, because I have expectations. I have ambitions. I have standards.
“At the moment results ain’t matching where I want to be and where this club should be. At times we all need picking up.”
Bowyer was asked what he said to the players at full time.
“Disappointed. I could say a lot more than that, but that’s the best way to put it. It’s between me and the players. I don’t think I should share that with anyone, it’s a private conversation.
“We started really well. We played a different shape to turn it around in two days – like we did – we could only work on it yesterday. The players took to it very well. It suited the players who started the game. My biggest criticism in that first half is we didn’t take our chances. We didn’t capitalise on the areas we were in. I don’t know how many times we got in and around their box in the first half. But our quality wasn’t good enough in the final third, our final decision-making.
“We should’ve had a second goal. It was onside.”
Michael Fondop cancelled out Jayden Stockley’s early opener after Diallang Jaiyesimi switched off from a Burton throw, allowing Jonny Smith to be under no pressure as he crossed from the left wing.
Bowyer said: “It’s not good enough, is it? Let’s be honest. If we want to win games we can’t just switch off. It don’t matter who you are playing against. If you switch off they can punish you – and it’s happened too much, hasn’t it? Especially at home. Another game we have dominated and we’ve come away with nothing.”
