Millwall boss has positive playing message for Danny McNamara
Gary Rowett is mulling over rotating Mahlon Romeo and Danny McNamara in the Championship run in.
McNamara was recalled from an impressive loan spell at St Johnstone in January and started six league matches in a row – his form prompting the Lions to secure the 22-year-old on a new contract.
But the Millwall fan has been an unused sub for the last five fixtures as Rowett has gone with the more seasoned Romeo in the right-sided wing-back role.
“We’re in the fortunate positon to have got two really good players – one a little more experienced than the other,” said the Lions boss. “Danny showed he can come in and influence and impact games. What you don’t want for a young player like that is not to then play for 15 games, because there’s no point.
“Mahlon coming back into the side was good timing in some ways. He gave us a little bit of impetus going forward for four or five games – I think we’ve won three and drawn two. It’s hard to change that team.
“But Danny will come back in and play some more games before the end of the season.
“There might be some weeks, although I don’t like a lack of continuity, that we dovetail for back to back games. At times that energy and freshness can impact your chances of winning games. If we have got the opportunity to play one on a Saturday and one on a Tuesday then it might have to be something we look at moving forward.
“Danny has done really well, he is a really good kid. He’ll be a huge part of our club moving forward.”
