Millwall boss chuffed for Callum Davidson as he celebrates capturing Scottish League Cup silverware

Gary Rowett was delighted to see his former assistant Callum Davidson win the Scottish League Cup on Sunday.

The former Millwall number two is now in charge of St Johnstone. And they beat Livingston 1-0 at the weekend to claim that piece of silverware for the first time in the club’s history.

Rowett brought Davidson with him to the Lions but he left his role in June 2020 to take on a managerial role in his own right.

On-loan Lions right-back James Brown was an unused sub at Hampden.

“I’ve spoken to Cal regularly since he has gone up there and I dropped him a text before the game – I didn’t want to bother him too much,” said Rowett.

“I just told him that we’re all rooting for you. I tried to watch the game but I couldn’t get it, so I followed it on the internet. When they went 1-0 up quite early on you hope they add to it but in the end they didn’t need to.

“It’s been a really interesting first season for him as a manager. They’ve had quite a tough time in the league but they have played well, been very organised but – similar to us – they have struggled to score goals. The cup run has given them a lot of confidence.

“Cal’s had a fabulous first season. I’ve said before that I think he will do really well as a manager. He has got very good ideas and is very organised. He really knows what he wants from his team.

“When you have worked with someone closely you want them to do really well when they go down their own path. It’s been a good start for him.”
