Charlton Athletic owner targets boss appointment by end of this week
Thomas Sandgaard is hoping to have a new permanent Charlton Athletic manager by the end of this week – and is not expecting it to be a short-term appointment.
It was confirmed this afternoon that Lee Bowyer had resigned with the 44-year-old boss poised to take charge at Championship strugglers Birmingham City.
Johnnie Jackson will take caretaker charge for tomorrow’s home game against Bristol Rovers.
Sandgaard told the South London Press: “You’ve probably come to know me already [in terms of getting things done] – I want to put something in place before the end of the week.
“My expectation is we have something in place for several years to come. It would have to be a plan B if it’s just a caretaker until the end of the season.”
Asked about Jackson’s chances of landing the job, Sandgaard replied: “I know it is an ambition of his and he has great history with the club. He has got a lot of things in his favour.”
The US-based Danish businessman has also made it clear it will be his call on Bowyer’s successor. He also has director of football Steve Gallen and Jed Roddy, appointed as technical director in October, as sounding boards.
“It’s primarily me that’s leading the effort,” said Sandgaard. “Johnnie has taken over immediately so that we have someone on the sidelines on Tuesday for the next game and then we’re going to figure out if we’re going to recruit internally or find someone from the outside.
“We’re going to look for someone who can take us on the next step of the journey while we rebuild the club.”
