Dons keeper gifts late goal to Fleetwood and deal blow to Plough Lane club’s survival hopes

Fleetwood struck with only seconds on the clock to deal AFC Wimbledon a tough blow to their hopes of staying in League One at the end of this season.

Barrie McKay was gifted the strike in the 88th minute by Dons keeper Nik Tzanev who tried to steer a back-pass away from the striker but instead poked it straight onto his right food and the ball bobbled over the line for the winner.

That enabled Town to take all the points back north and leave the Dons needing to make up a single points on the teams above them, in the last eight games of their season, to stay up.

There were chances in the scruffy game, with Joe Pigott having a drive blocked. Tzanev saved well several times – but his late error was what gave Fleetwood the points.

To make matters all the more frustrating, Northampton and Swindon, in 19th and 20th position in the table and above the drop spots, both lost. But both have played more games than Mark Robinson’s side. Of their close rivals, only Bristol Rovers won, 2-1 at home to play-off hopefuls Doncaster.
