AFC Wimbledon boss Robinson: We shouldn’t see Ipswich as a scalp

BY DANIEL MARSH

AFC Wimbledon head coach Mark Robinson has urged his side to reinstall the club’s past mentality – citing their 3-0 win over Ipswich Town tonight as an example of how the club’s perception “has got to change”.

The Dons were fully deserving of their second win in four games after gunning down the Tractor Boys in SW19. Goals from Will Nightingale, Jack Rudoni and Ryan Longman saw Wimbledon see off their League One play-off chasing visitors.

But Robinson was adamant that his side shouldn’t be seeing any club as a scalp, responding: “This is where this club has got to change.

“This club is built on not looking at clubs [like that]. This is no disrespect to Ipswich, who are a wonderful football club, but Wimbledon never used to look at clubs like that as scalps, it was just ‘we are Wimbledon’.

“That’s always been our mentality with the academy. We’d go anywhere and expect to win and that’s the kind of mentality that we have to get back here. Not looking at other clubs’ badges but remembering what we are and what we’re about and believing that wherever we go that we’re going to give everyone a good game.”

After following up on Saturday’s 5-1 win at Accrington, it’s the first since October 2019 that Wimbledon have recorded consecutive league victories.

But Robinson refused to get carried away ahead of Saturday’s showdown with Swindon Town, who are entrenched in the relegation zone below the Dons.

“At the end of the day it’s two wins, that’s all it is. It’s six points and it’s two wins and it’s great for the players’ confidence and I hope the fans are feeling more excited by the performances and the wins. But it means absolutely nothing. They need to enjoy the moment now, but tomorrow morning we come back to work and we need to be relentless so we can go back-to-back again.”
