Alex Gilbey: Charlton Athletic win sends out a statement – a club this size needs to be in play-offs

Alex Gilbey reckons that Peterborough United will not be relishing their trip to The Valley on Saturday after Charlton pumped Plymouth Argyle 6-0 tonight.

The emphatic victory extended the Addicks’ unbeaten run in League One to 10 matches and moved them back into the sixth and final play-off spot.

Peterborough are the hot favourites to secure an automatic promotion place with Hull City but lost 1-0 at home to Gillingham this evening.

Gilbey was on the scoresheet at Home Park, his second goal in the last three matches.

He told Charlton TV: “I’m buzzing to get another goal. I’m loving my football at the minute. Since the new gaffer came in he has put a lot of faith in me and I’m just trying to repay that faith.

“Yeah massively [the system suits him]. The gaffer has given me license to bomb forward and try to score goals. That’s what I’m doing – long may it continue.

“It was a real top performance. We sent a statement out. We’re buzzing. We can go back to the hotel, put our feet up and get ready for another big game Saturday.”

Gilbey has played the last four matches – all 90 minutes – but was absent from the matchday squad from the 13 fixtures preceding that.

He said: “It’s been really disappointing for me. I came to this club, it’s a big honour to play for the club, and now I’m getting my chance. He said to me: ‘Just go out and do what you can do, show people how good you are as a player’.

“The lads are on cloud nine, but we can’t get too carried away. We have to keep pushing on. Saturday’s another big game and we should be in the play-offs, this club shouldn’t be messing about. It should be our aim and it’s in our hands now.

“After tonight I think Peterborough are not going to want to be playing us. Obviously they are up there but we’ve just put six goals past Plymouth, who aren’t a bad side. We’re in a really good place.”
