Nigel Adkins hopes Peterborough know they’re in for a tough game as he welcomes back three key men for Valley fixture this weekend

Charlton know they’re in for a tough battle as second-placed Peterborough visit The Valley on Saturday – but Addicks boss Nigel Adkins hopes the feeling is mutual as he prepares to welcome back three key men for the fixture.
The play-off chasing South Londoners will go into the game with the Posh on the back of a 10-game unbeaten run and fresh from smashing six goals past Plymouth Argyle at Home Park on Tuesday night.
Peterborough’s 1-0 home reverse against Gillingham on the same evening was a first loss in six with Darren Ferguson’s side sitting seven points clear of Sunderland in the second automatic promotion place.
Charlton are in League One’s top six as it stands and will be boosted by the return from injuries for Washington and Maatsen, with Inniss also back in contention after being rested for the trip to Devon.
Adkins said: “I went to watch Peterborough play Sunderland. Peterborough are a good side, massive threats. There’s every chance they’re going to be in the automatic promotion position to go up.
“We know it’s going to be a tough game but I’d like to hope Peterborough know it’s going to be a tough game for them as well. We’ve got momentum, spirit. We’ve been solid in our defensive resolve and we’ve got a massive goal threats which have been demonstrated again tonight.
“We’re in the race. I think that’s the important thing. We’ve got good momentum. We’ve got tough games coming up, we all know that. But what we’ve got, you’ve seen, is we’ve got a group of players who are working extremely hard for each other. There’s a good spirit amongst them.
“Another clean sheet, we’re defensively hard to play against and we’ve got goal-scoring threats. Chuks [Aneke] is on there.
“Conor Washington comes back into the squad on the weekend and Ian Maatsen and Ryan Inniss, who’s not travelled today. We made sure we’ve looked after him. So, the squad is strong going into a very important run of games now. We’re well and truly in this race.”
