Charlton manager Nigel Adkins on English football’s social media boycott this weekend

Charlton manager Nigel Adkins has had his say on the social media boycott taking place this weekend.

A statement was issued on Saturday which stated that all Premier League and EFL teams – along with the top women’s divisions – would all stop using any of their platforms from 3pm on Friday until 11.59pm on Monday. The move is aimed at stopping discriminatory abuse that some players and other football figures receive online.

Adkins told the South London Press: “The club have put a stance out, they are joining in with the football family.

“You saw what happened with the European Super League – where everybody came together to stand against it. It is fair to say that social media can be very, very positive – I use it myself in a positive way. But likewise we have to be very, very supportive of everybody so that it is used in a good way.

“We’re all human beings and we can all be affected in certain ways. We have to be mindful of that and protective of everybody.

“We want to have a society, I’m not just talking about social media, where we are surrounded by good people all the time. That’s the general rule for everybody – you want to be in a world where a lot of good things are going on.

“However we know this is the real world, and some things do happen. If we can all be working in the same way to make it a good place to be, surely that’s in everybody’s interests.”
