Casey O’Gorman suffered a crash and a mechanical failure in the first round of the Hawkers European Talent Cup championship in Estoril, Portugal last weekend.

The Erith 13-year-old is signed up to superbike legend Shane “Shakey” Byrne’s 67 Sports Management company.

O’Gorman qualified his 250cc Honda NSF in fourth place for the first round and led into turn one, only to get caught out by cold tyres and go off the track a few corners later. He remounted at the back of the pack and crossed the line in 21st place, 37 seconds behind the winner.

O’Gorman’s bike stalled at the start of race two. Although he moved from 37th to 21st place another racer collided with the rear of the teenager’s machine, once again sending him into the gravel traps.

“I was gutted not to finish a race after such a strong qualifying,” said O’Gorman, pictured.

The next round is at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo circuit in Spain on May 9.

“I tested there during the winter and I won the MotoGP support race before,” said O’Gorman.

“I’m hoping to get my first win (in the ETC) there.”
