Coventry 6 Millwall 1 – Lions suffer thrashing in final Championship fixture of the season

Millwall’s final game of the 2020-21 season ended in disappointment as they were thrashed 6-1 by Coventry City at St Andrews.

The result means the Lions finish 12th position in the Championship.

Coventry had the first chance of the game, Viktor Gyokeres’ cutback found Callum O’Hare, whose strike was excellently blocked by Mahlon Romeo. A couple of minutes later O’Hare went close again, his shot went just wide of the post.

But five minutes later the Sky Blues did take the lead, Jordan Shipley’s curled strike beat Bart Bialkowski.

However, Millwall started to grow into the game and had a few chances to level the score. Mason Bennett received the ball on the edge of the box, but he could only find the sidenetting. Just after the half hour mark, Millwall came even closer, Tom Bradshaw’s clever flick caught out Coventry’s keeper Marko Marosi only for the ball to hit the wrong side of the post.

Right on the stroke of half-time Coventry doubled their lead, Kyle McFadzean’s well taken strike beat Bialksowki in the Millwall goal to give Mark Robin’s side a two goal advantage at the break.

Just after the restart McFadzean gave Millwall a lifeline, Malone’s fizzing cross was turned into his own net by the Coventry skipper. But five minutes later, Coventry restored their two goal lead, Dominic Hyam was the quickest to react after a scramble in the box. The hosts added a fourth just after the hour mark, O’Hare was on hand to smash the ball home from close range. It was five for the hosts soon after, after Matty James tapped in from close range.

Coventry were in a relentless mood and should have scored a sixth, Tyler Walker’s strike skimmed the post with 20 minutes to go. With five minutes to go, it was six for the hosts, the ball ricocheted off Walker and trickled into the net. Bialkowski pulled off a great reaction save with just two minutes remaining to prevent a seventh goal for Coventry.
